Orient

In 1661, six English families settled on the easternmost end of the North Fork of Long Island, New York in an area we now call Orient. Stop by the Orient Country Store or pick up sweets from The Candy Man and chances are you'll still meet some of the original families: King, Terry, Latham, Tuthill, and Vail.

Originally called Oysterponds Upper Neck because of the abundant shellfish in the area, the name was changed to Orient to reflect the area's easternmost position on the North Fork. By 1870, Orient, NY was a well-known resort where until the 1960’s the Orient Point Inn played host to President Grover Cleveland, Walt Whitman, orator Daniel Webster, actress Sarah Bernhardt, and James Fenimore Cooper who wrote "Sea Lions" set in Orient.

North Fork real estate has always been a source of pride in Orient. Throughout Orient is a collection of original wood homes reflecting the history of this natural harbor town. Homes not just on historic Village Lane or Orchard Street are still in great demand. The natural beauty of the Peconic Bay shore is among the few places on the Eastern Shore of the US with original tidal wetlands intact where you can observe a truly spectacular bird migration. The ferries to New London, CT and Orient Beach State Park make Orient a very convenient place for summer vacations for people from NYC to Boston.

When considering homes for sale on the North Fork of Long Island, New York, Town & Country Real Estate has a property to show you in Orient that fits your interest and North Fork lifestyle, whether it be a forever home, summer house, vacation rental, or investment property.
